How to track restaurants you find on Instagram

Saving a restaurant reel feels like planning to go. It rarely is. The place gets buried, and you find yourself standing two streets away from somewhere you meant to try, eating somewhere else. The fix is getting the place out of the saved tab and onto something you consult.

Why do saved restaurants never turn into visits?

A restaurant you save is a plan with no trigger. It sits in a list you only open deliberately, and the moment you would actually use it, standing hungry in an unfamiliar part of town, is precisely the moment you will not think to go looking.

The name is also usually the first thing to go. What you remember is the dish. The name was in the caption, and the caption is not something the saved grid shows you, so recognition has to work off a square photo of a plate. Two hundred saves in, every square photo of a plate looks like every other one.

Option one: save the restaurant to a Google Maps list

This is the strongest manual method, and it is worth doing properly.

1. Search the place in Google Maps

   Take the name from the reel caption or the tagged location on the post.

2. Tap Save and choose a list

   Want to go is the built-in one. You can create your own, per city if you travel.

3. Add a note

   Write the dish. Six months later "the cold noodles" is worth more than the restaurant name.

The payoff is real: saved places appear as pins on the map you already use for directions, so the reminder arrives when you are nearby. That is the trigger the saved tab never gives you. Lists can also be shared as a link, which makes them the only method on this page that survives being handed to the person you are traveling with.

The cost is that every place is filed by hand, and the link back to the reel is gone unless you paste it into the note.

Option two: keep it in an Instagram collection

Instagram has a Places collection convention and tagged locations on posts, and you can save into a collection named for a city.

It is better than nothing and worse than Maps, because it still has no search, no map, and no way to answer "what did I save near here". You have moved the pile, not solved it.

Does Instagram have a map of the places you saved?

No. There is no map view of your saved posts. A post can carry a tagged location, and tapping that location shows you other posts from the same place, but nothing collects the locations across your own saves and puts them on one map. To see where your saved restaurants are, you would have to open each post individually and check.

Instagram did once have a closer answer. Guides, launched in 2020, included a Places format built for exactly this: a curated list of restaurants with your own notes. Instagram retired Guides in December 2023 and converted existing ones into Collections, so the format is gone and a collection named Places is what remains of it.

The practical result is that any real map of your Instagram restaurant saves has to be built somewhere other than Instagram, either by hand in Maps or automatically from an export.

Option three: have your saved places mapped for you

The third approach is to let something read the saves you already make and pull the places out.

The restaurant from a reel lands next to the bar from an article and the shop a friend sent you, because it works on anything you save rather than only Instagram.

Each pin keeps the original post behind it, so you get the name and the map position without losing the video that made you want to go.

Making it work in practice

Whichever method you choose, two habits decide whether you ever go.

• Record the dish, not just the place. Motivation lives in the specific thing you wanted to eat.
• Keep it on a map. A list is something you have to remember to open. A map puts the place in front of you at the moment it is useful, which is the whole difference between saving and going.

If years of restaurant saves are already sitting in Instagram, they can come across in one step rather than being re-entered by hand. The export guide covers it, and the captions matter here more than anywhere, because the address and the name usually live in them. Exporting takes a copy, so your Instagram saves stay exactly where they are.
