How to save YouTube videos for later, properly

Everyone has a Watch Later list. Almost no one watches later. The list grows in the order you found things, the titles are whatever the creator chose at upload, and the one video you need is always somewhere in the middle. Here are the ways to save YouTube videos so they come back to you.

Why Watch Later becomes a graveyard

Watch Later is a single chronological pile. There are no folders inside it, nothing is grouped by topic, and it fills at the speed of your curiosity, which for most people is faster than the speed of their free evenings. YouTube caps it at 5,000 videos, and people genuinely hit the cap. When a creator deletes or privates a video, the entry turns into a grey Deleted video row with no clue about what it used to be, which is its own small heartbreak years later.

The design assumes you will come back soon. The reality is that a saved video is a promise to a future self who has forgotten why it mattered. Anything that fixes saving has to preserve the why, not just the link.

Option one: playlists with real names

Playlists are YouTube's actual answer, and used with discipline they work. Save to Woodworking, Interview prep and Dinner ideas rather than to Watch Later, and things stay roughly findable. The costs: you do the filing yourself at save time, forever; a video that fits two lists lives in one unless you file it twice; and finding one video still means scrolling a list, because search inside your own playlists is patchy on the mobile app. Deleted videos still turn grey with no trace of what they were.

Option two: the queue, for tonight only

The Add to queue button is the honest version of Watch Later: it does not pretend to be an archive. The queue evaporates when you close the app, which is exactly right for a video you will watch in the next hour and useless for anything else. Use it for tonight; never mistake it for saving.

Option three: share it to something that reads it

The third way is to hand the video to an app whose whole job is remembering. Share a YouTube video or Short to resaw and it reads the video itself: the audio, the description, what is on screen. It writes a plain-English title for what the video actually contains, files it into a folder that matches (a recipe with the recipes, a tool review with the tech), and keeps a summary you can search. A cooking video becomes a step-by-step you can follow with ingredients listed. Later you can ask in plain words, that video about sharpening chisels, and get it back with the source.

Because resaw keeps its own record, a video that later goes private keeps its title, summary and thumbnail in your vault. The link back may die; the memory of what it was does not.

How to save a YouTube video to resaw

From the YouTube app: Share → More → resaw. From Safari: share the page the same way. That is the whole flow, and it works identically for Shorts and full-length videos. The video keeps its link back to YouTube, so watching it later is one tap.
